An English invasion of Scotland was undertaken by
Protector Somerset in order to try to enforce the marriage treaty
made in 1543, which arranged a match between Edward VI and Mary
Queen of Scots. On 10th September his army defeated the Scots at
Pinkie, near Musselburgh. They later captured Edinburgh and
establish English garrisons at various castles including
Roxburgh.
