Historical Context: What is the Italian Shoah?

The Italian Shoah spanned the years from 1938 to 1945. It was initiated by and developed under the Fascist dictatorship of Benito Mussolini, and, beginning in 1943, continued under the German occupation of Italy. It operated in two phases that historians have identified as the “persecution of rights” (1938-1943), which involved the persecution and internment on Italian soil of Jewish Italians, foreign Jewish residents, and other minority peoples, and the “persecution of lives” (1943-1945), which included the deportation of thousands to concentration camps operated by Nazi Germany.
