Context and Precursors

The most conspicuous characteristics of Romanian cinema before 2000 have been a lack of direction and a frequent stylistic dullness. Film had a rocky start in Romania, where a largely disinterested public and an even more disinterested state, which didn’t start supporting and financing the film industry until the 1930s, resulted in a tiny infrastructure, and limited production means and technical training. After 1945, the Communist regime developed the infrastructure considerably, but the production was strongly subordinated to the enforcement of ideological orthodoxy through propaganda.
