According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the vikings moved from East Anglia to Northumbria in 867, where they took advantage of civil strife between rival kings Osbert and Ælle. Whilst the Northumbrians did eventually unite to defend themselves, the vikings seized York, and secured their submission.
