In the course of the Second Boer War, the pattern of British defeat initiated at the Battle of Stormberg the previous day is continued when a British force under Lord Methuen is repulsed by Piet Cronje at Magersfontein in the Orange Free State. The so-called 'Black week' for the British is completed on 15th with Louis Botha's repulse of British commander Redvers Buller at the Battle of Colenso in Natal.
