Britain and Germany sign a secret agreement on the future of Portugal's colonies in Africa, since Portugal is facing bankruptcy. According to its terms, Britain is to obtain the lease of Delagoa Bay, and Germany to receive parts of Mozambique and Angola. In March, Joseph Chamberlain, British Secretary of State for the Colonies, had suggested an alliance between Britain and Germany, but this Convention is the only fruit of the resultant negotiations, and less than two decades later the two countries are at war.
