A French colonial expedition under Major Jean-Baptiste Marchand sets off to advance to Fashoda (now the town of Kodok) and claim the territory of Sudan for France. It lies at a point of strategic importance because it lies at the intersection of a north-south line between Capetown and Cairo and a west-east line between Dakar and Djibouti, thus representing both France and Britain's ambition for their colonial communications.
