In the wake of the failed Jameson Raid, Cecil Rhodes, prime minister of Cape Colony, is forced to resign his position. A committee of the Cape Assembly later reports that Rhodes had sanctioned and planned the raid, which led to the outbreak of both the Second Matabele War and the Second Boer War. Already the Transvaal Republic begins to order munitions from Europe and fortifies Pretoria and Johannesburg in preparation for conflict.
