The Ethiopians defeat Italian troops at the Battle of Amba Alagi, forcing the Italians to retreat to Eritrea and prefiguring the Ethiopians' eventual victory in the war the following year. Ethiopia thus becomes the first African country to have successfully pushed out would-be European colonisers.
