Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who believes that the Islamic identity of his Empire is being threatened by the Christianity of Europe, orders the massacre of Christian Armenians in Ottoman-ruled Anatolia and Armenia. At least 80 000 people were killed in the violence, with some estimates ranging as high as 300 000.
