The Austro-Hungarian prime minister, Count Taaffe, resigns after the unity of his coalition collapses over the issue of universal suffrage. While he had put forward a proposal for the extension of the franchise, many of his colleagues refused to countenance the measure. He is succeeded as Prime Minister by Alfred III, Prince of Windisch-Grätz.
