Menelek of Shoa becomes King of Ethiopia, following a disputed succession on the death in March of King Johannes IV. He does so through the aid of the Italian military, but once installed as king he boosts the country's power to such an extent that the Ethiopians inflict a humiliating defeat on the erstwhile Italian allies in 1896 to gain independence.
