A military coup d'etat takes place in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, supported by Russia which was worried by the liberalism of Prince Alexander and chief minister Stefan Stambolov. Prince Alexander is forced to abdicate, but Stambolov manages to hold on to power and exiles the leaders of the coup.
