France faces what becomes known as the 'Crisis of Seize Mai'. President MacMahon, angered by the failure of Jules Simon, a moderate republican, to stand up to the anti-clerical Left, dismisses him from the position of prime minister. Instead, he appoints the monarchist, Duc de Broglie, but this appointment receives a vote of no confidence in the Chamber. MacMahon is forced to call another election, which returns a sizeable majority of republicans in relation to royalists. In the face of this popular hostility, MacMahon is ultimately forced to resign.
