In the US Presidential election, the Democratic candidate S. J. Tilden secures 184 out of the necessary 185 electoral votes to gain victory, while his Republican opponent R. B. Hayes receives 165. However, 20 votes are disputed, and are settled by an electoral commission the following January in Hayes' favour.
