In elections to the German Reichstag, the Ultramontane Catholic Centre Party increases its number of seats. Their gain in popularity stems in part from hostility to the May Laws of the previous year, whereby the government had shifted control of clerical training and appointments to the state, forcing half of the country's seminaries to close.
