In what had become known as the 'Alabama case', the Unionist government had claimed damages from the British after a warship that was built in Britain, in 1862, was sold to the Confederates and inflicted considerable damage on Unionist fleets. Now a Geneva court of arbitration finds Britain legally responsible, and Britain agrees to pay the USA over $15 million in damages.
