Britain and the USA sign the Treaty of Washington, settling disputes over the north-west boundary between the American state and the territory of British Colombia, as well as the attendant fishing rights. It also attempts to bring an end to the US resentment over the 'Alabama claims' for British assistance to the Confederates in the Civil War, as Britain agrees to pay $15.5 million in damages.
