In what becomes known as the 'Alabama case', the Unionist government claims damages from the British after a warship that was built in Britain is sold to the Confederates, and goes on to inflict considerable damage on Unionist fleets. Eventually, in 1872, Britain agrees to pay the USA over $15 million in damages.
