George Canning was a Tory politician who was famous for his brilliant oratory and ability to inspire both great admiration and dislike. He had been a loyal supporter of Pitt the Younger during his early career, resigning his post as Paymaster General when Pitt stepped down as Prime Minister in 1801. He developed a reputation as a liberal through his support for Catholic Emancipation, though he did not favour Parliamentary reform. He holds the unfortunate record as the shortest-serving Prime Minister, as he died suddenly from pneumonia, after little over five months in office.
