Austria sends an ultimatum to Russia, threatening war if Russia does not accept the 'Vienna Points' of 8th August 1854. These had demanded Russia to abandon its claims to a protectorate over the Sultan's Christian subjects. The proposals had also called for the revision of the Straits settlement in the interests of European powers, for free passage of the mouths of the Danube River, and a guarantee of the integrity of the Danubian principalities and of Serbia. Austria now demands, in addition, for Russia to promise the neutrality of the Black Sea, and to cede the territory of Bessarabia (now parts of Moldova and Ukraine).
