Under the Prime Ministership of Lord Aberdeen, William Ewert Gladstone is appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. On 18th April he introduces his first Budget, which abolishes most of the duties on partially manufactured goods and foodstuffs and halves most duties on manufactured products.
