The Ecclesiastical Titles Act is passed, in an attempt to prevent Roman Catholic bishops from taking titles from territory within Britain. However, it fails in its intended purpose, since the newly established hierarchy of Catholic bishops set up by Pope Pius IX the previous year does take its titles from British places, but makes a concession to the Church of England in choosing different towns to those used by Anglican bishops.
