Henry Clay proposes to the US Senate a series of compromise resolutions about slavery, California, and the boundaries of Texas. Two days later the vote goes against him, since the majority of his own party, the Whigs, is hostile to his proposals. Although he vows to push these measures through, he soon succumbs to tuberculosis, and Stephen A. Douglas is the one who eventually ensures they become law.
