The British government suspends Habeas Corpus in Ireland, allowing them to imprison the radical Young Irelanders without trial if they so choose. This sparks off an insurrection in Tipperary led by Smith O'Brien, in which the rebels seize hostages but are ultimately forced to flee. This episode is often known as the 'Famine Rebellion' or the 'Battle of Ballingarry'.
