British Prime Minister Robert Peel attempts to conciliate the Irish via the Maynooth Grant, which rules that a Catholic seminary at Maynooth will have its funding increased from £9000 per annum to £26 000. Peel claims that this would produce a better-educated and more reasonable clergy, but many Protestants are hostile to the measure, although it does eventually pass.
