Daniel O'Connell, the leader of the Irish Nationalists, signs the 'Lichfield House Compact' with the Whig opposition, allying both groups against the Conservative Party. The Irish promise to provide the Whigs with parliamentary support provided that the Whigs vote against the coercion acts.
