The Working Men's Party is founded in both Philadelphia and New York, the first labour union established in the USA. It calls for universal male suffrage, equal educational opportunities, and limits on the length of the working day, and grows rapidly in numbers. However, it disintegrates within five years of its establishment, due in part to factional disputes and in part to the founding of the Democratic Party, which many left to join.
