William I of the Netherlands faces insecurity in his attempts to reconcile the demands of his Calvinist subjects in the northern provinces, and the Catholics in the south. In order to win the support of the latter, he signs a Concordat with Pope Leo XII. However, despite these efforts, revolution breaks out in Brussels three years later which results in the breakaway of the Belgian state.
