At the command of the Ottoman Sultan, troops attack and kill Ali Pasha of Janina, the Albanian ruler of Rumelia (present-day Greece, parts of Bulgaria and Turkey). The removal of this antagonistic figure enables the Sultan to concentrate his forces against the Greek insurgents.
