On the death of Tsarina Elizabeth of Russia, she is succeeded by Peter III. He aims at securing a peaceful end to the Seven Years' War, but is assassinated after only six months on the throne, in July 1762. His wife, a conspirator in his overthrow, becomes the next Tsarina as Catherine II (known as Catherine the Great).
