In Portugal, Jesuits begin to be expelled from the country. This results in part from the conspiracy of 1758, in which it was rumoured that Jesuits had inside knowledge of the attempted royal assassination by the Tavora family. Other contributing factors include disputes in the New World about transfers of colonial territory between Spain and Portugal, in which it appeared that the Jesuits might be attempting to assert an independent empire of their own.
