Through the mediation of Austrian Chancellor Kaunitz, France and Austria sign the Alliance of Versailles. This agreement, coupled with the Treaty of Westminster recently signed between Britain and Prussia, reverses the pattern of longstanding alliances which saw France and Prussia in opposition to Britain and Austria, and thus constitutes a Diplomatic Revolution. By the terms of the agreement, the Holy Roman Empire is to remain neutral in an Anglo-French war, but either party will aid the other if attacked by Prussia. In addition, France is to recognise the Austrian Netherlands and to aid Austria if the latter is attacked by Turkey.
