In Portugal, Carvalho becomes First Minister in the wake of the huge Lisbon earthquake of the previous year. He is noted for the distinctive architectural style he introduced in the rebuilding of Lisbon (known as Pombaline after his title as Marquess of Pombal), and also for his effects in diminishing the influence of the Inquisition and introducing reforms influenced by the Enlightenment.
