The Swedish Africa Company is founded. The following year, an expedition is sent to Africa under the command of Henrik Carloff, which establishes a colony on the Gold Coast (in present-day Ghana). This settlement only lasts thirteen years, before it is overrun by the Danes in 1663 and incorporated into their colonial territory.
