France and Spain sign the Treaty of Escurial, promising to guarantee each other's possessions and form an alliance against England. By the terms of this agreement, France will help Spain recover Gibraltar and will withdraw the trade concessions given to England by the Treaty of Utrecht. The Union of the two branches of the Bourbon family is declared indivisible and this forms the first Family Compact.
