Britain, Holland, Spain and the Emperor sign the Treaty of Vienna to avert an international war over the Italian duchies. By the terms of this treaty, the British and Dutch guarantee the Pragmatic Sanction, Spain obtains Parma and Piacenza, and the Austria East India Company is to be finally abolished (originally the treaty was drafted in March but Spain refused to sign). By a secret clause England insists that Maria Theresa, daughter of the Emperor, shall not marry a Bourbon.
