Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, dies. The duchy passes to his son, Gian Gastone, but he is to prove the last of the Medici dukes, because he is succeeded by Francis III of Lorraine, later Holy Roman Emperor through his marriage to Maria Theresa.
