A peace agreement brings to an end the war between Russia and Turkey that had erupted when Charles XII of Sweden, newly defeated by the Russians, had escaped to the Ottoman court and persuaded the Sultan to declare war on Russia. The Treaty of Pruth (signed by the River Pruth) was surprisingly advantageous to Russia given their militarily weak position. Tsar Peter restored Azov to the Ottomans and allowed Charles XII to return to Sweden, but for their part the Ottomans agreed to withdraw from the Great Northern War.
