The Assembly of the French Clergy endorses Louis XIV's Declaration of Four Articles to secure the independence of the Gallican Church. The Articles declare the Pope's power to be limited to spiritual affairs, while even on matters of faith, his opinion requires confirmation by the whole Church. General Councils of the Church are judged superior to the Pope, and the independence of the Gallican Church is asserted.
