France and Spain sign the Peace of Aix-Ia-Chapelle, ending the War of Devolution. They meet in a Congress mediated by the Triple Alliance of England, the United Provinces and Sweden. France restores Franche-Comté to Spanish control, in return gaining Lille, Tournai, Oudenarde and nine other Flemish towns. Succession in the Spanish Netherlands, however, remains uncertain.
