Louis XIV signs a treaty with Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, arranging the future partition of the Spanish Empire in case the 8-year-old Charles II of Spain were to die without heirs. In such a situation, they agree, France is to acquire the Spanish Netherlands, Franche-Comte, Naples, Sicily, Navarre and the Spanish possessions in Africa and in the East Philippines, while Austria is to have Spain and the rest of the empire.
