England and Holland sign the Alliance of the Hague, through the negotiatory initiative of John de Witt, Pensionary of Holland, and Sir William Temple, English ambassador at the Hague. Each agrees to come to the aid of the other if attacked, and both undertake to bring about a peace between France and Spain. Sweden subsequently joins England and Holland, thus forming a Triple Alliance.
