French troops invade the Spanish Netherlands, sparking the War of Devolution, which continues until May 1668. After the death of his father-in-law Philip IV of Spain in 1665, Louis XIV claims Brabant, Flanders and other territories in the Netherlands for himself, on the grounds that these personal estates of the Spanish crown should descend by right of devolution. On the same day, the Ottoman Turks begin to besiege Candia (present-day Heraklion, in Crete).
