The Rhenish League is established under the Protectorate of French, after Louis XIV fails to secure the election to Holy Roman Emperor. The League is made up of the King of France, the three spiritual Electors, Münster, Neuburg, Brunswick, Hesse-Cassel, Sweden and Bavaria. Its formation is a triumph of diplomacy for French statesman Hugues de Lionne, who masterminds the negotiations.
