In Part VI of his Interpretation of Dreams (1900) Sigmund Freud uses the term Dream Work to collect the mechanisms which he theorises are involved in the production of the latent content of the dream.
Freud was among the first physicians to recognise that dreaming is important to the psychological and physiological health of the individual and saw it as an interface between the conscious and unconscious processes.
