In what becomes known as the 'Day of Dupes', Cardinal Richelieu scuppers the conspiracy that has been developed against him by Marie de' Medici and Gaston of Orleans. He secures the execution of Marillac, the Queen Mother's servant, and banishes the Queen Mother from Paris, forcing her to take refuge in Brussels. The failure of this plot places the Cardinal in a stronger political position than ever before.
