Cardinal Richelieu sends his confidant Father Joseph (l'Eminence Grise) as a diplomatic agent, to persuade the princes and electors of Germany, currently meeting at Ratisbon, to demand the dismissal of Wallenstein. Richelieu hopes that this will embarass Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II, and halt his aggressive aspirations.
