Elector Palatine Frederick V is placed under the ban of the Empire by Ferdinand II. The emperor secretly transfers control of the Upper Palatinate and the electoral title to Maximilian of Bavaria, an appointment which is confirmed by the Electoral College in February 1623. The epicentre of the Thirty Years War now shifts from Bohemia to the Palatinate.
