England and Spain sign a secret treaty arranging a marriage between Charles, Prince of Wales, and the Infanta Maria. Under its contentious terms, Roman Catholics are to be granted freedom of worship in England. This would cause outrage in a dominantly Protestant England if enforced, and James I abrogates the treaty in December 1623.
